Welcome to the Spanish Goat Association Breed Resource Website.
Educating, Tracking, Promoting and Meeting the Needs of Spanish Goat Breeders.
We are proud to conserve the most efficient and hardy goat in the United States of America.
The purpose of this Breed Resource Website:
1) Provide accurate and clear information about the Spanish Goat Breed.
2) A channel to Verify those goat producers that want to be a part of safeguarding the genetic purity
of the breed and are willing to undergo the verification process in order to be listed as a Spanish goat breeder on this website.
3) Provide buyers a source list of Spanish goat producers that have been verified.
4) Identify those producers who have DNA Registered Seed Stock.
The Spanish goats in the United States are tried-and-true. They can handle almost any climate, region, terrain, management style and management system if they are given time to adapt and their nutritional needs are met. This breed is strong, fertile, parasite-tolerant, independent and excellent mothers if not bred before maturity.
Spanish goats are a breed, but are also known as "brush goats," "scrub goats," and "woods goats." Many have been crossbred with other breeds for the benefit of the Spanish goat genetics. Additionally, there are over 16 known bloodlines of Spanish goats. Identifying Spanish goats visually is very tricky. This fact is why tracking and verification of Spanish Goats is essential to ensure the longevity and purity of their diverse genetics.
The genetic diversity of the Spanish goat is what drives their adaptability, fertility, and herd strength. These genetics are what livestock producers are seeking so they may ensure their own sustainable and profitable livestock production systems. Our goal of safeguarding this heritage breed can only be achieved with the participation of dedicated breeders.
"Heritage Goats," is not an official designation for the Spanish goat. However, The Livestock Conservancy is an organization that is working to preserve all species of rare livestock breeds and poultry, and as such, they have listed the Spanish goat on their "Heritage Livestock Breeds Page."
