Commercial Meat Production versus Heritage Breed Genetics:

The Spanish goat breed has been thriving on this continent for over 500 years which results in what is called a “landrace” breed. Landrace genetics are diverse, adaptable, and hardy. The landrace Spanish goat is considered a valued Heritage Breed that needs to be safeguarded and preserved.

While the fullblood Landrace Spanish goat is valuable for land management, it is not normally viewed as a meat producing animal due to its survivability and thrift (much like wild deer). However, commercial meat producers value the mothering traits and hardiness of the breed and seek to cross breed with other meatier goat breeds for profit.

Crossbreeding for commercial production creates two problems:
1) A population of crossbred genetics that are sold as Spanish, diluting the breed genetics.
2) Buyers seeking fullblood Spanish genetics who end up with diluted genetics.
